Usually used as a tax term, this is the person in a household who provides the primary support, the household consisting of dependent children or relatives who are of blood relation, marriage or adoption. Federal income tax law provides for favorable tax treatment for a head of household if unmarried and living at the household for at least 6 months out of a year. Many states also consider single persons who are self-supportive to be a head of household.
