MECHANICS LIEN

A legal claim by a contractor for work that is unpaid by the person hiring the contractor. The liens is placed on the item in the county in which the property is located, for example, a car or home. After being recorded, a claimant can require the item to be sold at auction so that the lien may be satisfied from the proceeds.
