GENERIC MARK

Trademark law, a word or symbol or term used to describe a product, service or item but don’t distinguish the goods or services as being from a specific origin. For example, the term aspirin is now synonymous with a painkilling medication produced by a number of manufacturers but not associated with one. Generic marks do not and cannot receive trademark protection.
