FEDERAL QUESTION

TheLaw.com Law Dictionary & Black's Law Dictionary 2nd Ed.

A question of law (as part of a lawsuit) that concerns the exclusive area covered by federal law and jurisdiction of the federal courts, e.g. bankruptcy. Having a federal question is the basis for having jurisdiction for federal court, regardless of the monetary amount in question.
