A common phrase referring to the police station recording process of a person who has been arrested before putting them behind bars. The police record the arrested person’s name, age, address and the reason for their arrest as well as the taking an inventory and custody of the arrested person’s personal effects, followed by a mug shot photo and fingerprints. This phrase was created prior to the modern computer era, when entries were written into a book.
