Abbreviation for Latin term id est or that is which is used to provide explanation of a more general term as opposed to examples. May also be thought of as a phrase for in other words. For example: Bringing a lawsuit requires a plaintiff to have a cause of action, i.e. a series of facts that the law recognizes is a harm caused by another person for which a lawsuit can be brought.
