In old English law, this word was used to signify the parts into which a hundred or wapentake was divided. It also signifies a town or city. Demi vill. A town consisting of five freemen, or frank pledges. Spelman. Villa est ex pluribus mansionibus vi cinata, et collata ex pluribus vicinis, et sub appellatione villarum continentur burgl et civitates. Vill is a neighborhood of many mansions, a collection of many neighbors, and under the term of “vllls” boroughs and cities are contained.
