STATUTE

The written, codified law that is passed by a governmental body, usually as a result of being passed by Congress and signed into law by the President or passed by state legislature and signed into law by the state governor. Statutes are usually contained in a volume or book called the code of law. See also ordinance which is a local law such as of a county.
