When the damages claimed by a plaintiff are contingent upon an event or occurrence in the future that are not certain. For example, in a personal injury case a plaintiff may claim (without the testimony of a doctor) that it is possible that the broken bone that has healed may become arthritic and become painful. Such damages should not be awarded. See DAMAGES.
