Service of legal documents or pleadings (or even a summons) upon a defendant by publishing the contents of the document within a court approved newspaper or periodical of general circulation. Service by publication is usually used to notify a defendant that cannot be located, which may be unintentional or deliberate (e.g. hiding at an unknown address in order to escape service and eventually liability.)
