1. To perform or work for a person or party as an employee or as a part of the armed forces. 2. To legally and officially deliver a summons and complaint or other legal document upon a person. See service of process.

In Scotch practice. To render a verdict or decision In favor of a person claiming to be an heir; to declare the fact of his heirship judicially.
