SEARCH AND SEIZURE

Criminal Law: In gathering evidence, law enforcement may conduct a search of a person or premises to find tangible evidence of a crime and seize the evidence for presentation at trial. The Fourth and Fifteenth Amendment require that any such search and seizure must be reasonable. Law enforcement will usually require a warrant but may conduct limited searches, such as a pat down, if they have reasonable cause that a crime was committed.
