A document that establishes that a U.S. patent has been officially filed and prevents second comers from filing a patent claiming a new invention of the same nature. It is inexpensive and preserves the rights of the person filing to investigate whether completing the full application is financially worthwhile. It is much easier to prepare and file than a complete patent application.
