Meaning literally after this; it is a portion of the Latin phrase post hoc, ergo propter hoc meaning after this, therefore because of this. This phrase is used to illustrate a failure of logic in assuming that something later happened as a result of a prior event, merely because the later event happened subsequent to the prior event.
