PARENTAL KIDNAPPING PREVENTION ACT

Also known as the PKPA, this is a federal law that seeks to prevent parents from taking their children (usually in the midst of a bitter divorce) and fleeing to another state and hoping to obtain the benefits of protection in that state. This requires that all states ensure that parents are in compliance with the PKPA and will not enforce orders in a foreign state in favor of a parent who has essentially kidnapped the child from the original state.
