INTERMEDIATE SCRUTINY

A middle level of scrutiny as to the necessity of a statute or law that may infringe upon the rights of people who belong to a quasi-suspect class (as opposed to a fundamental class) of people. This level of scrutiny requires that the law infringing upon rights must involve an important governmental interest and also be substantially related to the accomplishment of important governmental goals. Top level scrutiny is strict scrutiny test and bottom level is the rational basis test.
