In criminal cases, this is a group of persons whom a case is presented to by a district attorney and who decide whether there is sufficient evidence that would justify an indictment (formal charges) and a trial where the defendant may be found guilty. After an arrest for a felony crime, the grand jury indictment is the first step towards prosecution and trial.
