FOSTER CARE

When children are unable to live in the homes of their parents, usually due to neglect or abuse, the court may order they be moved to another home to care for their children. Foster parents become legally responsible to care for their foster children but do not have the same rights as biological parents. They may be limited in how they can discipline a child, educate them to follow a certain religion and others. Foster parents must adopt a child to have the same rights as biological parents and the rights of the biological parents must first be terminated by a court. This does not often occur since the goal of foster care is to provide a temporary residence for the children until they can be safely returned to their biological parents.
