FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

Also known as FMLA, this federal law required employees to provide 12 weeks to an employee of unpaid leave each year for the birth or adoption of a child, as well as for the health needs of the family or illnesses. The employee must be allowed to return to the same position or substantially similar position that the employee was in prior to the leave. FMLA only applies to employers with 50 or more employees and there are other exceptions.
