DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT

Also known as DOMA, it defines marriage as being the relationship of one man and one woman, specifically to exclude same sex marriages. There is a federal DOMA and some states have adopted DOMA, which prevents them from recognizing same sex marriages.
