Abbreviation for the federal law known as the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. The law requires employers to offer its employees, including spouses and dependents, insurance coverage that continues even if their work hours are reduced or if they are terminated for any reason other than gross misconduct this is usually defined as more than just poor work or judgment on the job. Coverage usually extends for at least 18 months after termination of employment.
