The name used for the principal (or first) trial court in most states. In the federal court system, the term circuit refers to one of thirteen geographic regions which may cover several states. The origin of the term was prior to mass mechanical transit during a time when judges and lawyers rode the circuit of their jurisdictional territory in order to hold court in those areas.
