BILL OF RIGHTS

(1) English law. A statute passed in the reign of William and Mary, so called, because it declared the true rights of British subjects. (2) Refers to the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution and which were adopted in 1791. The Bill of Rights establishes the foundation for many of the freedoms enjoyed within American society and includes the right of free speech (first amendment), religion and assembly. Other rights include those against self incrimination (pleading the fifth amendment), right to due process and a speedy trial, the prohibition of an illegal search and seizure.
