Commonly abbreviated as ALJ; frequently an attorney who is an employee of the government and who has been appointed as an officer of the agency who can hear cases and preside over hearings and appeals concerning matters in a government agency. An ALJ may also be called a hearing officer and functions in the same manner as a judge in a courtroom.
